This
is a biographical study focussing on the life of Joseph Henry Maiden
(1859-1925) who as a 21-year old Londoner arrived in Sydney in 1881
seeking health. His early experience as an elementary science teacher,
passion for the natural world, and an appreciation of current technological
achievements propelled him towards roles as diverse as university lecturer,
President of the (Royal) Australian Historical Society, curator of the
Technological Museum (forerunner of the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney),1881-1896
and then as Director of the Botanic Gardens Sydney, 1896-1924. Gilbert
notes that Maiden was a prolific writer, producing several major botanical
works, and was able to indulge in his constant desire to collect museum
exhibits and botanical specimens. This
book completes a trilogy of biographies of leading botanists, the other
two being the Reverend William Woolls (1814-1893) and the Reverend H.M.R.
Rupp (1872-1956). Both were well known to Joseph Maiden for he tutored
the latter and was tutored by the former. The
book
was published with the support of the descendants of Joseph Maiden and
the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. |
