MICHAEL SHARKEY

Born in Sydney, Michael Sharkey studied science at the Sydney Teachers' College, and worked in knockabout jobs, including publishing, for several years. He worked in the Commonwealth Department of Housing from 1967-1972, then taught Australian literature at Sydney University, before teaching high school mathematics in New Zealand, and New Zealand literature at Auckland University.

He has subsequently taught literature and cultural studies at several universities in Australia and in China. He has worked as a freelance editor and journalist, and has run writing workshops and seminars in gaols, schools and other institutions in Australia and overseas.

Michael Sharkey graduated Ph.D from Auckland and BA from Sydney in literature. He is Senior Lecturer in English and Communication Studies at the University of New England, and has taught language and literature for many years in Australia, New Zealand, China and Europe. He is the author of fourteen collections of poems, and has edited several anthologies and literary journals.
