LIONEL GILBERT (OAM)

A former State school teacher, Research and Information Officer at the University of New England, he undertook honours and Ph.D. studies in botanical history under the late Professors Russell Ward and Noel Beadle. A member of the National Trust, he served on the former N.S.W. Archives Authority, 1975 - 1987.. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists and the Royal Australian Historical Society.

Two years after the publication of The Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney: a History, 1861 -1985 (1986), he was appointed an Honorary Research Associate of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, and in 1995 was awarded an OAM for contributions to regional and community history.

His last publication, The Last Word, is the culmination od a lifelong dediciation to documenting Australia in epitaths.
